Questions (in 50 words unless specified).

Tell us about yourself: (100 words)

I have lived in New Westminster since 1978.  I live with my partner Amber and together we have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. I am an avid volunteer with BC Transplant, Lookout Foundation and A Beef With Hunger Society. I am a past governor of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, 2008 Citizen of the year and a recipient of the Diamond Jubilee medal for community service. I was elected to City Council from 1996 to 2005 then the Provincial Legislature until 2009.  I returned to Council in 2011. My hobbies are performing music, poetry and political cartooning.

What are the Top 3 issues facing the City of New Westminster? (100 words)

2.1 New Westminster struggles with housing affordability. Families and seniors are spending too much on shelter which affects the local economy by diverting income.

2.2 As a community situated dead centre of Metro Vancouver, traffic and pedestrian/cycle safety are concerns that require sensitive management to ensure the safety of our residents.

2.3 Climate change is becoming a real threat to all of us. Extreme spring freshet followed by heat and drought will become serious challenges as we head into the future.

What is the biggest success or failure of the current city council?

Becoming a leader in smart growth and transparent government.

The City of New Westminster concluded a lengthy official community plan process and is working to implement that plan. With the city’s population projected to grow to 104,000 by 2041, is the city on the right track to accommodating this growth?

Supporting the award winning Growth Strategies plan will concentrate growth along transit corridors while preserving our region’s farmland and green space. Allowing for creative housing solutions while respecting our heritage.

What three people – alive or dead – would you invite to a dinner party?

Canada's greatest Canadian Tommy Douglas, my mother and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
