1. See your local firefighters in action at the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services’ annual Fire Prevention Week open house. Taking place on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glenbrook fire hall, the free event includes vehicle extrication demonstrations, equipment displays, a visit from Sparky the fire dog and barbecue (by donation) put on by the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society. The fire hall is at 1 East Sixth Ave., next to Canada Games Pool.
2. Help the New West Hospice Society to support people at end-of life by attending the River Walk for Hospice fundraiser. It’s on Saturday, Oct. 5 at River Market (810 Quayside Dr.), with registration from 9:30 to 10 a.m., the opening ceremony and entertainment at 10 a.m. and the walk at 10:15 a.m. Info at www.newwesthospice.ca.
3. Plant trees at TD Tree Days on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at Glenbrook Ravine. Arrive a few minutes early so you can complete your registration and receive your TD Tree days t-shirt. It’s advised you wear sturdy footwear, dress for the weather and bring a reusable water bottle. 4. Celebrate the arrival of fall at New West Apple Press Vol. 4 on Sunday, Oct. 6 from noon to 4 p.m. at Lord Kelvin Elementary School, 1010 Hamilton St. You can join your neighbours in celebrating the fall harvest by learning how to press apples – and take home some fresh (non-alcoholic) apple cider.
