What's happening in New West this weekend? Top picks for Aug. 3 to 5

1. Check out a classic when the Shadows and Dreams Theatre Company brings William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the stage of the Queen’s Park bandshell at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5.

O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Romeo - and Juliet - will be on stage in Queen's Park this weekend.

1. Check out a classic when the Shadows and Dreams Theatre Company brings William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the stage of the Queen’s Park bandshell at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5. This free performance is for all ages and is held rain or shine. For this production, the story of these star-crossed lovers is set in the 1920s.

2. Take in two great events at one time, when PechaKucha New West brings Volume 20 to the Queen’s Park Bandshell on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 8 to 10 p.m. As a twist, all 10 inspiring and entertaining presentations will be done by duos, so it will be double the fun. Steel & Oak Brewing Co. will be selling beer and the Old Country Pierogi food truck will be selling food on site, or you can take part in another event (See Number 3). It’s free, but RSVP at Eventbrite.ca (PechaKucha Night Volume 20) so organizers know how many people to expect.

3. Dine out with other community members when PopluckNW (popup dinners in open spaces) returns to New West on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Queen’s Park. Bring a food to share on foldable tables, mingle and enjoy live music before PechaKucha New West begins. Email [email protected] for info, and be sure to RSVP to Eventbrite.ca (search for Popluck NW) so organizers know how many people are attending.

4. Enjoy some Brazilian culture at Carnawest 2018 on Saturday, Aug. 4 from noon to 8 p.m. at Westminster Pier Park. Organized by the Brazilian Community Association, this free festival aims to promote the rich heritage of Brazil and features music, dance, food, sport, arts and a beer garden. 5. Explore the diverse range of plants and flowers that make their home in the Fraser River Basin at Plants Alive, a family workshop at Fraser River Discovery Centre. Running on Saturday, Aug. 4, visitors to the centre can enjoy a walking tour of the centre and participate in activities and crafts from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is included with admission to the centre. Fraser River Discovery Centre is at 788 Quayside Dr.
