A variety of games are planned for this year's Doggy Fun Day, which takes place on Sunday, Aug. 11 at Queen's Park.

VEATA hopes a yard sale it’s hosting this weekend will fill a void left by the cancellation of the 20th annual Doggy Fun  Day.

VEATA – the Pacific Volunteer Education and Assistance Team for Animals – is holding a yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the rear of 323 Queens Ave. The items are from the estate of a longtime animal welfare supporter in New West.

“She passed away and left everything in her will to VEATA,” said Cheryl Rogers of VEATA. “So we are having a yard sale.”

VEATA asks that attendees bring and wear a mask to the sale.

“All proceeds go to VEATA – Pacific Volunteer Education and Assistance Team for Animals,” Rogers said. “Most of the programs that we are doing now are temporary emergency fostering for pets of people in crisis, so if someone needs to go into a transition house, into detox or treatment, or if they have an emergency hospital stay and they don’t have a social safety net that can take care of their animals for them, then we will bring them into our care and take care of them until they can bring them back home again.”

Shoppers will find a variety of items at the sale, including housewares and brand new shoes. Organizers will have little socklets available for people to wear when trying on shoes or people can bring their own socks.

Doggy Fun Day, held every August at Queen’s Park, features a variety of events for dogs and their owners. The year’s 20th anniversary event had to be cancelled because of COVID-19.

Rogers said organizers debated on whether the group’s main fundraiser could proceed this year, given that it’s outdoors and people could be required to wear masks.

“It’s too many people in one place at one time. We thought there is no way we can do this,” she said. “We had to unfortunately cancel the 20th, and we are hoping this garage sale will replace some of the money that we would have made there.”
