Terry Fox Run attracts a crowd in New West

What's happening Around Town

Terry Fox’s legacy lives on in New Westminster – in a big way.

Folks of all ages took part in the 39th annual Terry Fox Run on New Westminster’s waterfront on Sept. 15. Organizer Kathy Jones is thrilled with the response to this year’s event.

“Biggest turnout in the 12 years that I have been run organizer,” she said in an email to the Record. “We had over 270 people between participants and volunteers and have raised over $22,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.”

The Smile band served up their peppy tunes for the fifth year in a row. The event also included a prize table, free food and drinks, T-shirt sales and a selfie station with a life-size photo of Fox.

Five members of Terry's Team – Jenna, Cathy, Deb, Barb and Nancy – cut the start ribbon to kick off the event. Terry’s Team is comprised of patients or survivors who embody the progress Fox hoped to see.

Jones said some of the highlights of this year’s Terry Fox run included participation by the Douglas College men's basketball team for the third consecutive year. She notes that a number of people with disabilities came out again this year, Chris Ham did the route in his wheelchair like he always does, Saint John Ambulance sent a volunteer crew to help out and River Market provided indoor space for registration and set-up.

Well done, folks!
