Fraser River Discovery Centre is serving up a fun-filled week of activities focused on salmon for spring break.

Super Saturdays are set to return to Fraser River Discovery Centre starting this weekend.

Super Saturdays events have been on-hold since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Fraser River Discovery Centre is now ready to bring them back in a safe way. The first event, taking place on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will focus on salmon.

“Super Saturdays are back, and what a fitting way to start – with a focus on our iconic wild Pacific salmon,” said Stephen Bruyneel, the centre’s director of external relations and development.

Chinook, Coho and Chum are three of seven distinct species of Pacific salmon that migrate up the Fraser River each the year. Super Saturdays participants will be able to take part in family-friendly crafts and activities, where they will learn more about these important species.

Attendees will learn a variety of fun facts about salmon, including: the Fraser River and its tributaries are home to one of the most productive salmon fisheries in the world; Pacific salmon are a keystone species, which means they are extremely important to the health and stability of the Fraser’s ecosystems; and Pacific salmon are anadromous, meaning they can survive in both salt and fresh water.

To protect the health and safety of visitors and staff, Fraser River Discovery Centre has introduced new measures to ensure Super Saturdays aren’t only fun, but safe.

“There will be 30-minute time-slots throughout the day, and pre-registration is required, with a maximum of 10 people per group,” Bruyneel said. “While visiting, groups are also asked to follow physical-distancing guidelines. All staff and volunteers will be wearing masks when interacting with the public and masks are also recommended for our guests. Finally, we will be cleaning and disinfecting the activity tables between groups.”

Fraser River Discovery Centre, located on New Westminster’s waterfront, closed in March because of COVID-19 and reopened on July 7. Located at 788 Quayside Dr., FRDC provides a variety of programs about the Mighty Fraser and offers various exhibits, hands-on attractions and displays.

Super Saturdaysis a series of public programs featuring a different Fraser River topic each month. Attendance to Super Saturdays is free with admission to Fraser River Discovery Centre.
