The New Westminster Police Department is looking to recruit more volunteers for its crime prevention unit this year. The police force is touting the volunteer roles as a way to build skills and meet some neighbours who “care as much about this city as you do.” “Joining the crime prevention unit is a way you can help make the changes you want to see in our city,” said crime prevention unit volunteer coordinator Const. Camille Oliveira. “And our revised application form means volunteering with us is now easier than ever.” Volunteers with the crime prevention unit help search for missing people, identify stolen vehicles, do citizens’ patrols in areas of the city, help with the anti-theft bicycle program and talk to residents about “crime-free strategies.” Application forms for volunteering can be found at nwpolice.org.
