Arrive with a jar – and some apples if you have them to share – and leave with some fresh-pressed apple cider.
Yes, the New West Apple Press Fest is back. It’s returning this weekend, running noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Lord Kelvin Community School.
The annual festival is organized by Mark Gifford and Will Mah, with help from family and neighbours. They bring several old-school cider presses to the school grounds, and volunteers help juice backyard apples from the neighbourhood, random orchard apples and 1,000 pounds of donated apples from Buy-Low Foods.
The fun also includes games and special musical desks.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun. Bring a glass jar or other container (make sure it’s heat-safe) and you can go home with fresh-pressed (non-alcoholic) apple cider. If you have apples for sharing, you can bring them along, but don’t worry if you don’t.
“We’re always looking to produce and taste-test a few New West single-tree heritage ciders, so drop a note if you’ve got a tree you would like to nominate,” the organizers said in a write-up about the festival.
The event is organized with help from a Vancouver Foundation Neighbourhood Small Grant from Family Services of Greater Vancouver.
