The New Westminster Public Library, which is among the facilities that have been closed to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, is one of the go-to places folks can go to beat the heat in the summer. Council wants staff to have a look at the city's heat emergency plan and consider how it's impacted by COVID-19.

The main branch of the New Westminster Public Library is entering the final phase of its renovation, which will last six to eight months. The library will remain open, with available collections and services accessible on the second floor, but the main branch’s children’s programs will be moving off-site to other accessible community locations.

The library’s drop-in Preschool Storytime (ages two to five) will be starting on Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. It will take place on Tuesdays at the Centennial Community Centre (65 East Sixth Ave.) and on Thursdays at the Plaskett Gallery in Massey Theatre (735 Eighth Ave.).

The drop-in Babytimes (newborn to 23 months) start on Sept. 19 at the Centennial Community Centre and will run every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

The English and French Reading Buddies programs (ages six to nine) will take place at the Plaskett Gallery in the Massey Theatre at 3:30 p.m. English Reading Buddies will meet on Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 18, and French Reading Buddies will meet on Thursdays, starting Sept. 20. Registration is required and begins Sept. 1.

The Young Readers’ Book Club (ages nine to 12) will take place in the Plaskett Gallery at the Massey Theatre. The participants will meet once a month on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 26. Registration starts Sept. 1.

Programs at the Queensborough library will continue to take place within the branch. Preschool Storytime will take place on Wednesdays at 11 a.m., beginning Sept. 19. Babytime will be offered on Mondays at 11 a.m., starting Sept. 17.

Kids aged eight to 12 can have Fun, Literally! in the library’s new after-school games program. It will take place in the Island Room of the Queensborough Community Centre on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 19. Kids will participate in fun and engaging games in this drop-in program.
