Here's how New West kids can get a medal from the mayor

Summer Reading Club celebrations have been moved to New Westminster City Hall, thanks to library renovations

Young readers get recognition from the mayor after the summer reading club in 2015. This year's medal ceremony has been moved to city hall because of library renovations.

New Westminster's young readers get a special treat for finishing their seven weeks of summer reading this year.

The New Westminster Public Library's Summer Reading Club, as usual, has been encouraging young readers to stay hooked on books this summer by offering weekly incentives (in the form of stickers and prizes) to read - or be read to - at least 15 minutes every day.

At last count, about 1,700 kids have signed up for the reading club, according to the library's social media. A medal ceremony honouring those who complete their seven weeks of reading is set for Aug. 25 at 1:30 p.m.

But, since library renovations are proceeding slightly more quickly than planned and the library will now be closed from Aug. 21 to 27, the medal ceremony will be held at New Westminster City Hall - and kids will have the chance to get their medals from Mayor Jonathan Cote and enjoy some celebratory cake.

(Parking is free and available in the back of city hall, with access off Sixth Street.)
