Chris Czajkowski and Fred Reid recount their stories of refusing to evacuate their properties in the face of impending wildfire in the new book Captured by Fire. They'll be at the New Westminster Public Library for a reading event on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

A best-selling author and a debut author are coming to New West to discuss their recently published book.

Chris Czajkowski, who has written 12 books about her four decades of wilderness living, and debut author Fred Reid are presenting a slide show and talk based on their book, Captured by Fire: Surviving British Columbia’s New Wildfire Reality. They will be at the New Westminster Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

“What happens when the worst wildfires in B.C.’s history are headed directly to your homestead in the remote B.C. wilderness, and you’ve decided to ignore evacuation orders in order to save your homes and animals?” said a press release about the event. “Co-authors and fellow homesteaders Chris Czajkowski and Fred Reid recount firsthand what it was like to do just that during the summer of 2017.”

Anyone wishing to attend is asked to pre-register for the talk at the library, by phone at 604-527-46687 or by email at askus@nwpl.ca.

Czajkowski is the author of books including: Snowshoes and Spotted Dick: Letters from a Wilderness Dweller; A Mountain Year: Nature Diary of a Wilderness Dweller; A Wilderness Dweller’s Cookbook: the Best Bread in the World and Other Recipes; Ginty’s Ghost: A Wilderness Dweller’s Dream (all Harbour Publishing) and Lonesome: Memoirs of a Wilderness Dog (TouchWood Editions).

“A beloved storyteller, Chris continues to inspire many with her heartfelt anecdotes about living off-grid and alone in cabins she herself has built throughout remote regions of British Columbia,” said the press release. “She currently lives in Kleena Kleene, B.C.”

Reid, who has worked in agriculture his whole life, spent more than 30 years farming in the Fraser Valley before moving to the Chilcotin.

Captured by Firewas published by Harbour Publishing in September 2019.

Captured by Fire, as well as several other books by Czajkowski are available at the New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave.
