The Senior Peer Counselling program is inviting potential volunteers to attend an upcoming information session to learn more about the program.

An information session is taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Century House, 620 Eighth St.

“The Century House Peer Counselling program is seeking warm and compassionate volunteers to assist adults 50+ in our community,” said a notice about the program. “There are no educational requirements as we believe life has been your teacher.”

The program has been supporting New West seniors dealing with emotion al distress for more than three decades. The senior peer counsellor aims to help in the smooth transition of a senior to a new experience, to work to a goal of independence and to enable seniors enjoy a sense of wellbeing and to be and active member of the community.

“Peer counselling is based on the principles of self-help and mutual aid,” said a write-up about the program. “Peer counsellors may have had similar life experiences and acquired life skills that increase the effectiveness of the client/counsellor relationship. Because Senior Peer Counsellors are peer-aged, a special bond of trust develops.”

Applications for the training must be submitted by Nov. 7. Volunteers will receive weekly training for a total of 50 hours, between Jan. 17 and June 20, 2019.
