A group of teens are being praised for helping to prevent the spread of a forest fire last week.

On Thursday, June 3 Williams Lake RCMP responded to a potential forest fire in an area behind 1400 Broadway Ave. South where they observed smoke billowing from the area behind the hillside.

Police grabbed fire extinguishers and climbed the hillside where they attempted to locate several trees and parts of the ground on fire.

That’s when they ran into a class from Williams Lake Secondary that was out for a hike.

RCMP say the students took swift action realizing potential issues if the fire spread and used the water they were carrying for their hike to try and extinguish the flames before the firefighters from the Cariboo Fire Centre arrived.

Police say they extend their appreciation to the “class of astute young people” and the responding Firefighters from the Cariboo Fire Centre.
