A body was recovered from the Fraser River this afternoon following a search that lasted nearly two hours.

Around 1 p.m., the Canadian Coast Guard rescue dive team got a call from the New Westminster Police Department asking for help finding a person who’d gone missing in the Fraser River near Sapperton Landing.

Officers told the coast guard the person had left Royal Columbian Hospital and walked into the water and disappeared, according to Dan Bate with Fisheries and Oceans Canada Pacific Region and Canadian Coast Guard.

“Local resources were having difficulty searching the area due to the shallow depth,” Bate wrote in an email to the Record.

The person was found deceased a short while later.

Calls to the New Westminster Police Department for further details have not been returned.

An earlier version of this story said the missing person had been rescued alive. That is incorrect. The Canadian Coast Guard has confirmed the individual is deceased.
