Charges are being considered against a youth after a bomb threat at New Westminster Secondary School.

New Westminster police say the report came in on Monday. The police department’s major crime unit took over of the case and notified the school district, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Scott.

“We just informed our parents this morning,” superintendent Pat Duncan told the Record Tuesday. “The NWPD did a sweep of the school and determined that there was no threat.”

There were no students at the school at the time.

In a letter to parents, principal John Tyler said a threat had been made against the school but it was determined there was no safety risk to students, staff or the public.

A teenage boy was arrested in connection to the alleged threat and a search was conducted of his home, which confirmed there was no risk to the public or the school community, Scott wrote in an email to the Record.

No details have been provided about the boy’s age or whether he is a student at the local high school. Scott said investigators have submitted a report to Crown counsel but didn’t say what charges – if any – were recommended.

“We continue to work closely with administrators to ensure everyone feels safe and experiences an excellent school year,” he added. “Again, there is no public safety concern at this time, and school is fully in session.”

Opening day assemblies at the high school went ahead as planned, Duncan said.
