With 31 years of service, Michael Ewen is the province's longest serving school trustee.

Ewen and his family have lived in New Westminster for five generations. Ewen attended Richard McBride, New Westminster Secondary School, Douglas College, UBC and SFU.

Ewen grew up in the Sapperton area and as an adult, has lived in both the Glenbrook and Queens Park areas.

"I am deeply committed to this community," said Ewen. "My wife Leanne and I have seen two of our children graduate from New Westminster alternate programs, SIGMA and the Outdoor School.

"We have seen the power of these programs in addressing our children's needs. This is how I believe an education system should work. No more one size fits all, but a system that responds to the needs of the community, parents and students.

"We need trustees who are prepared to bring themselves and all the community to the table.

"I believe that the role of the trustee is to advocate on behalf of our students, and seek input from everyone involved.

"The role of the school trustee is collaborative advocacy, working with staff, students, parents and the community to find ways to better meet the needs of our students and better support our staffs in meeting those needs."

Ewen is one of four school board candidates being endorsed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council.
