Deck out your windows loud and proud, New West

The New West Pride Society wants all local businesses to “pride out their windows” as part of a friendly competition.

Whether it’s rainbow-coloured boas, flowers, flags or balloons, president Jeremy Perry is encouraging everyone to show it loud and proud.

“We wanted to ensure that when we walk through New Westminster, no matter which area you’re in, you were going to be reminded that we are in the middle of a festival because there are events in every neighbourhood of the city,” he told the Record.“For the businesses, it’s great for them because they can show their support for diversity in the community, and that can actually be a real business boom for them.”

This is the second year of the window display competition, which is held in conjunction with New West Pride Week. Last year, there were 25 submissions, including the New Westminster Public Library and Fit on 6th. Perry wants to more than double that total in 2015.

“Our goal is to beat 100,” he said. “This year, thanks to a lot of volunteers, we’re pounding the pavement and trying to make sure that every business knows about it.”

Entering the contest is simple. Once a display is in place, snap a few photos and choose the best one. Even if there isn't a window, that's still OK (Bunches and Blooms won last year with their colourful flowers). Email the picture, along with the store name, location and contact information (phone number, Facebook page, Twitter handle, etc.) to [email protected]. A panel of judges, including Mayor Jonathan Cote, will look over all the entries and choose three finalists. The winner will be announced at the street party on Aug. 15, and a $250 donation will be made to a charity of his or her choice. Windows, meanwhile, should be set up for the start of New West Pride Week (Aug. 8) and should remain up for the entire eight days. Starting early never hurts either, Perry said.
