Burnaby apartment parcel thief granted conditional discharge

Nasim Kaveh Nasab, 43, was caught on CCTV stealing a parcel from the mail room of her apartment building at 7063 Hall Ave. in Burnaby, according to information presented in court.

A 43-year-old woman has been granted a conditional discharge and 12 months of probation for stealing packages at her Burnaby apartment building.

Nasim Kaveh Nasab was charged in March 2023 with five counts of theft and one count of possession of stolen property.

She was in Vancouver provincial court Friday to plead guilty to one count each of theft and possession of stolen property.

The charges relate to thefts at an apartment building at 7063 Hall Ave. in November 2022, according to agreed facts presented in court by Crown prosecutor Michael Fox.

On Nov. 16, 2022, CCTV cameras in the building’s mailroom captured Kaveh Nasab taking a package that wasn’t hers.

When police executed a search warrant at her apartment on Dec. 7, 2022, they turned up a number of other stolen parcels as well, Fox said.

Both Fox and defence lawyer David Milburn called for a conditional discharge with 12 months of probation for Kaveh Nasab.

That means she wouldn’t have a criminal record if she abides by the conditions of her probation.

Milburn said Kaveh Nasab, a single mother of twin teens, was struggling financially at the time and stole the packages in order to sell the items on Facebook Marketplace to fund her kids’ extra-curricular activities.

“She didn’t get around to that because she was caught right away,” Milburn said.

B.C. provincial court Judge Nancy Adams agreed to the conditional discharge but first admonished Kaveh Nasab.

“Mail is considered very personal,” Adams said. “Taking someone else’s mail and opening it or converting it to your own purpose is highly offensive to those people, no matter what it is, whether it’s a letter or a package – and you understand that.”

But Adams also noted Kaveh Nasab has no criminal, pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.

“She said nothing like this will ever happen again,” Milburn had said.

Under the terms of her probation, Kaveh Nasab will have to report to a probation officer and take counselling as directed.

She is also banned from possessing any mail, packages or parcels not addressed to her.
