SAVE THE DATE: PROX:IMITY RE:MIX

Coming to Massey Theatre Sunday, July 30

What the heck is PROX:IMITY RE:MIX?

PROX:IMITY RE:MIX is a creation by contemporary dance company MACHiNENOisY and presented by the Massey Theatre Society. The 30-minute dance performance is the culmination of two weeks of training led by artistic directors Delia Brett, Daelik, Sammy Chien and Christopher Kelly. Aimed at queer and allied youth, teen performers are trained in improvisation, contact dance, performance and new media. The goal was to recreate and transform MACHiNENOisY’s project Law of Proximity, a community-led performance in 2012, where eight youth were mentored in the creation of multimedia dance.

Tell me more.

Well, MACHiNENOisY’s goal is to foster creation and performances that transcend traditional notions of dance and theatre while PROX:IMITY RE:MIX intends to highlight “the unique queer and queer-allied identities and talents of local youth,” notes a press release.

For Massey Theatre executive director Jessica Schneider, PROX:IMITY RE:MIX fills a void in the arts community.

“We’re so happy to have the opportunity to present PROX:IMITY RE:MIX again,” she said in a press release. “It fulfils a distinct need in the LGBTQ+ community and provides a positive opportunity for youth-oriented social dialogue and self-expression.”

PROX:IMITY RE:MIX was previously presented in New Westminster as part of the Momentum Youth Festival in 2015.

What else?

Expect Sunday’s performance to explore issues of identity, gender and community.

Ok, give me the details.

As mentioned, the show is on Sunday, July 30. It starts at 7 p.m. and is an all-ages show. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids and youth up to 24 years (plus service charges). Buy at www.ticketsnw.ca.
