Alison Lawrence, Annabel Fitzsimmons and Mary Francis Moore are the co-creators of Bittergirl, coming to the stage at Anvil Centre Feb. 18.

Three women, three breakups and one hilarious hit musical.

The Arts Club Theatre Company is back on the road with Bittergirl: The Musical, coming to the Anvil Centre Theatre Feb. 18.

It’s the first time the Arts Club will bring its touring show to the New Westminster venue.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the team at the impressive new Anvil Centre this season,” said Bill Millerd, artistic managing director of the Arts Club Theatre Company, in a press release. “This venue has immense capacity to showcase the best in live performance from the Lower Mainland, and we’re proud to be on their stage.”

Bittergirl: The Musical, is a contemporary hit created by three writers and performers – Annabel (Griffiths) Fitzsimmons, Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore – who met in Toronto in 1999 while each was recovering from a breakup. They took their experiences of being dumped and turned them into the smash-hit play bittergirl.

After that, they published the relationship advice book BITTERGIRL: Getting Over Getting Dumped. From there, their success encouraged them to create Bittergirl: The Musical, keeping all their original breakup stories and adding girl-group music from the 1960s and ’70s – incorporating hits such as Be My Baby, And Then He Kissed Me, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and Where Did Our Love Go?

The show debuted at the Charlottetown Festival in June 2015.

For this production, the three “bittergirls” in question will be played by Cailin Stadnyk, Lauren Bowler and Katrina Reynolds, alongside fellow cast member Josh Epstein.

It’s directed and choreographed by Valerie Easton.

“What a pleasure it will be to welcome the Arts Club Theatre Company to New Westminster at last,” said Jessica Schneider, Anvil Centre’s theatre director, in the release. “I have no doubt people will have a wonderful time with Bittergirl: The Musical.”
