Vagabond Players
Vagabond Players' latest production, Sleeping Beauty, is one of our top picks for the weekend in New West.

1. Head to The Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park for the Vagabond Players production of Sleeping Beauty, when this classic fairytale comes to life as an all-ages, non-traditional pantomime. (Let’s just say, it involves a prince stumbling across a castle in Queen’s Park that nobody else can see.) You can catch Sleeping Beauty from Thursday to Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. until Dec. 17. Tickets and info at www.vagabondplayers.ca.

2. Celebrate the Arts Council of New Westminster’s 50th anniversary – and its future – at a bash on Sunday, Nov. 26 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Centennial Lodge in Queen’s Park. The celebration includes food, wine and entertainment, as well as a chance to chat and share stories.

3. Attend an evening of storytelling when Deborah Williams and Laura Drummond bring The Flame storytelling event to the Plaskett Gallery at the Massey Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. Janice Bannister, Lisa Bunting, Drummond, Colleen Winton, J.J. Lee, Syd Bosel, Aidan Chafe and Devon More are among the folks you’ll hear from in this event that’s normally offered in Vancouver and Victoria. Jay Brazeau is the evening’s musical guest. Massey Theatre is at 735 Eighth Ave.

4. Get inspired at Pecha Kucha New West, when 10 speakers will share their passions with 20 images lasting 20 seconds each. Volume 17 is at the Anvil Centre Theatre, 777 Columbia St. Attendees can mingle and enjoy craft beer and wine starting at 7 p.m., with presentations getting underway at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 and available at www.ticketsnw.ca.

5. Shop for one-of-a-kind gifts at the Van Dop Gallery’s open house, Experience the Art of Giving, on Saturday, Nov. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ornaments, jewelry, glassware and décor items are among the items you’ll find at the gallery at 421 Richmond St.

6. Listen to five bands at the Dan Smith Benefit Concert at the Columbia Theatre. The fundraiser features a silent auction, wine raffle, 50/50 draw, and performances by Unspoken Souls, Damaged Goods, Just off the Grid, Six Gun Romeo and Amalien. For info and tickets go to www.dansmithconcert.com.
