Students at New Westminster Secondary School are looking for a few deserving people to receive a special gift.

Students in Daniel Lee’s bike maintenance class at the high school have refurbished several children and adult bicycles and they want to donate them to people who might not be able to afford a brand new bike.

“We got a handful of kids’ bikes that were in decent condition, so I just got some of the kids … to fix those up to donate. I just want to get the bikes to kids,” Lee told the Record.

Lee is hoping the community will be able to connect him with a family in-need that can’t afford to buy their kids bikes.

Grade 9 student Ayden Cummings and Grade 10 student Perry Lemieux were part of the group that helped fix up the bikes for donating.

“Some were just pretty basic repairs; cleaning them up, fixing up the tires. Some of them we had to do a bunch of stuff,” Lemieux said.

Both students are avid cyclists – their preferred sport is mountain biking – and they were happy to work on the project if it means more kids will be able to experience cycling, they said.

“I think it’s a good way to socialize, first of all. Because if you’re doing a sport that a lot of other people do, it’s a great way to connect with other people,” Cummings said.

“Just enjoy the sport,” Lemieux added. “I personally love it because there’s really no rules to it, you can do whatever you want. Just showing younger kids, especially, that you don’t have to be stuck inside playing video games, you can go out and explore.”

The boys have repaired a few adult bikes, too, and they’re also available for donation.

If anyone knows any deserving recipients, they’re asked to contact Lee at [email protected].
