Queen Elizabeth Elementary School is looking for volunteers to help install the second part of a new playground. The first half was built two years ago, partially funded with $25,000 from the provincial government, and the Queensborough school’s parent advisory council (PAC) has just recently reached its fundraising goal to complete the second half.

“We are very proud,” PAC executive Roya Sarwary told the Record in an email.

Putting in the new playground with help from community volunteers instead of relying on a playground company will save the school $7000, according to organizers.

The installation will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 20 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 21 – rain or shine. For more information, call 604-831-2477 or 778-858-9848. Bring your own tools.

Employers recognized for helping youth

New Westminster employers were recognized at an event in Burnaby this month for their support of youth apprenticeships.

The event was part of the inaugural provincewide Proud Sponsor of Youth Apprentices Tour by the Industry Training Authority – the body that manages B.C.’s apprenticeship system and certifies skilled tradespeople in the province.

Employer-sponsors from New West, Burnaby, Vancouver, Richmond and Coquitlam gathered at Burnaby Central Secondary School, joined by apprentices, educators and ITA representatives.

New West employers recognized at the event included Rivers Edge Woodworks, the Boathouse Restaurant, White Spot, Key West Ford and Tri-M Plumbing.

Friend2Friend

Expert players are still needed for a New Westminster play centre for kids with autism.

Expert players are typically-developing children aged three through 14, with good social, communication and peer play skills.

The Friend2Friend Social Learning Society is a non-profit charity that has brought kids with autism and other special needs together with their typically developing peers since 2012.

The group’s New West centre opened in September and expert players, who attend the programs for free, are still needed for some play groups.

The programs are designed for so-called novice players, but organizers say research shows expert players benefit as well, with enhanced social, communication, leadership and empathy skills.

Silver-medal accountant

New Westminster certified management accountant (CMA) student Candice Hartwell was awarded a silver medal last month for earning the second highest grade on the CMA national entrance exam and the legacy CMA strategic leadership program.

Hartwell was one of nine New West CMA students on hand at a Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia convocation ceremony in Vancouver Oct. 10.

Man San Au, Phillip Campeau, Mundeep Grewall, Jacob Helliwell, Shafeen Jinnah, Shelley Legin, Dickson Lin, and Sinthya Simmonds were also recognized as having either become designated members of CPABC or eligible for membership by the end of 2016.

To qualify as a CPA, CMA students must have a university degree or equivalent, 24 months of practical professional work experience, and complete the CMA Strategic Leadership Program or CMA Executive Program.
